Emergency Preparedness
You can't underestimate the importance of emergency preparedness. An emergency can strike at any time. Are you prepared? Disasters interrupt thousands of lives each year. The resulting chaos doesn’t simply affect people. Property damage, ranging from loss of belongings to the destruction of dwellings and buildings, adversely affects anyone in the midst of a disaster. When the emergency alert arrives, you need to be prepared. Having an emergency plan in place and realizing potential dangers for your area and reducing the potential for problems may help avoid damage. Be prepared by knowing how to mitigate, prepare, respond to, and recover from specific emergencies that could occur in your area.
Security vs. Freedom
What is the balance between security and freedom? This is an issue raised by terrorism and the specter of weapons of mass destruction. Until September 11, 2001, Americans gave little thought to the clash of freedom and security. The combination of the modern means of communication and the nature of modern terrorism raises the question of whether restrictions on the one might help battle the proliferation of the other. There are grave questions about whether the intrusions are worth the cost. What's more important: security or freedom? But it's a trick question. The way out of the apparent dilemma between security and freedom is to reject the underlying idea that the two are in conflict and that a trade-off is necessary.
Fiscal Responsibility
Fiscal Responsibility starts at the local level. Fiscal restraint and common sense with the budget are vitally important in government. If we continue on the path we
are currently in, all that our tax dollars and government revenues will be able to do is pay interest on the mountain of debt we have compiled in the past few decades. That translates into no government funded programs or services of any kind, and future generations of Americans will still struggle under a crushing tax burden with nothing to show for it. We are at a crucial point in history right now. We must think very carefully about our next moves.
Ethical Responsibility
One of the most important responsibilities that we place on the leaders of organizations is upholding the highest standards of ethical behavior. In a nutshell, this comes down to doing the right thing even when the wrong thing might also have some attraction. Work-place ethics are most often related to decision-making processes. Leaders are often put in decisions where they must choose among options that vary in their degree of ethical behavior. One of the reasons why this is a common issue for leaders is that there are often competing priorities for businesses.
